Artistic Discoveries
By Ruth Collis of www.PaintingTemplates.com
Drawing Enlargement Once in a rare opportunity, you get an awakening, not from being slapped upside the head from what you're doing wrong, but from a technological insight or breakthrough, so to speak. Looking back to seeing how a mini art projector worked, when I saw, literally, how "the Tracer" could take my sketchbook drawing and blow it up to the size of a canvas or a wall size, I was just amazed at what possibilities this meant. I could now make large paintings out of my drawings. Starting on the canvas to draw first, for details, is unfeasible because of having to erase messups on a grated canvas texture, doesn't work too well. Now, many paintings later, I look back at my discovery that started it all, not knowing there was yet another major discovery or two ahead. Getting Unmixable Mediums to Work Then I found a bottle of Blair Finishing Spray to seal my charcoal drawings, and keep them from smudging. For pastels too. One particular nightmare of a project I remember was trying to add brilliant acrylic copper shimmer to the hair of a little girl running into the garden, but that was painted in watercolor first. Each time I would add copper paint, all these lumps would appear. I would go through the painstaking process of trying to get rid of those lumps, and blend all background colors in watercolor again to then get the copper hair done with acrylics. It wouldn't work, mixing the two mediums, no matter what, until I looked closer at what's causing these lumps... it was lumps of paint! Which paint, and why? I would look in both paint jars and see smooth clear formula, but then lumps on canvas. So weird. Somehow I realized watercolor paint may dry, but gets re-activated when you touch anything wet to it again... water, or even liquid paint, whether acrylic or watercolor. Well I did NOT want to give up my brilliant copper of acrylic, and did this whole wonderful dreamy painting in watercolors to begin with, and thought and thought. Somehow I was reminded of this Blair Finishing Spray that seals smudges out. I read the bottle saying it could seal watercolors too. Well if it could do that, then I could paint on top of the sealer with my copper acrylics... Sure enough, that solved my problem of mixing mediums and allowed me both. I was amazed. Later I read that this Blair sealer enables a BASE for you to paint on, which went right along with what I was thinking. Ebook Creation for Pictures Well, fast forward into the future, struggling through creating an online business, I was given a tool to create a PDF document which makes ebooks... like information kind of ebooks. Writing kind of information. I decided to try a picture instead, and WOW! There was another discovery... a literal picture inside an ebook I could sell, not words! It was just exciting beyond words to see my Butterfly there in downloadable format! Could it really be true? Who else was doing this? No one. Only cheesy kid designs given out for free, that have literally no value. Only enough to scribble on or become refrigerator art, not anything of archivable value. But what if I turned it into a whole actual Business where I offer quality line drawn designs made from photographs even, where all shadows and dimension are present? Videos made, and charts, reference pictures to assist creation, and articles on how to get past some barriers people have when it comes to a blank canvas, or even setting UP their space, and how to get through emotional struggles of the homefront in order to be creative? About organizing effectively? What if? Most people do not do trial and error on their own. They would WANT to be shown how to do some fun stuff that comes naturally for me. Testing is fun for the discoveries made. Other people don't like to do this research work, nor put in much effort. Painting Template Download Site All the possibilities after Discovery come whirling at you... “how” to sell a picture. Well you print it out. But how do you keep the printer ink of the printed design from mixing with your paint? Ah, back to the Blair Finishing Spray to read the rest of the can contents that I didn't realize how many things the particular “Art/Craft Projects” line could do. So here I read again that this sealer waterproofs and seals. Well if it could seal two mediums out from each other, why could it not seal printer ink for people to paint over? So there goes more testing, finding it does what it says, but not so well on at least the watercolor medium, the paint may NOT be able to soak through into the paper as well if there's this sealing barrier, so to use sparingly, and find that balance, where it will seal out enough printer ink, and yet allow enough watercolor to soak through to the thick watercolor paper and have somewhere to go as it dries, as is the nature of that medium. All other mediums are a breeze to use over sealed designs. I tested printed out designs that work for me, but will it work for others? I think people should go to the site , buy, download, paint, and send me pictures. Solves Problem of Boring Paintings Finally for me, this would solve the influx of boring paintings out there. Most popular iconic paintings over time are dreadful, that seem to fancy people's minds. Look at the Mona Lisa background... I don't care what you say, the colors used, looks like she's in hell, or a dreary sand pit where tractors labor. Look at the Blue Boy at the Huntington Library... who cares if the artist re-used his canvases? Although painted well and with skill, how boring, and what a waste of time. Even in schools nowdays, what do teachers have you draw? The same old boring fruit still life. Why not a skull or something of more unique interest? For one class, I will never forget the teacher making us sketch her horrid junk in our big sketch pads. Talk about uninspiration. Well, maybe it was inspiring to her if she liked Vintage stuff. But to me, a modern designer, was rather depressing. Of course every person is allowed to like what they do, but for me who never fits in anywhere, there has to be some unique point in life that I bring a solution for, to this world. I excite over all the colorful Exotic Birds I could offer as a package for people to paint, peaceful Gardens to come, and outdoor Fun Sports as I acquire specialized cameras. Everyone loves an animal or zoo pictures to paint... the possibilities are endless of a world to be brought to the every day person to interact with. Thinking back to this Blair sealer, I am just in awe at all it means to make things possible for people. Even without it, people can still get their designs and transfer to another surface, but with a lot more hell and time consumed. With this sealer, you can just print out, seal, and paint right away on to some simple watercolor paper, or actual canvas fabric sheets. I am so amazed beyond belief at the technology of being able to live in this age, where I draw wherever I am, configure, upload, and have the same “digital” thing in someone else's “physical” hands. Recognition This not only solves the problem of where to get a product of my very own, but is now limitless! I saw this very idea working in my friend's mind when telling him. Just seeing him realize the possibilities, confirmed my own reaction. Most artists only know “painting made/painting sold”, which keeps them the factory worker forever, unless they like to paint. But for me, I could only fathom my dream of making a product once and sold over and over again, and all put on automation as much as possible, to free up my time. Of course it would be overbearing to get the process started and going. But then to hear a supervisor at work that is on a more friend level with me, ask me if I thought this up myself, and told me how ingenious it is... I cannot tell in tears how acknowledged that made me finally feel for once. Finally. And all the struggles I went through in each painting beforehand, I could now share with others how to overcome. To give all these secrets away like this, could be in a disguise of a long article here no one will ever read, but even when I show people what they could do, they don't want the work, and rightly so, it is an overbearing burden at times, but is only hope to hang on to. Tools of Discovery I cannot tell how exciting it is to find “tools” that lift you to higher ground and improve the quality of your life, yet only found for those willing to do all the grunt testing of things and finding what works and doesn't work. It is the grueling part, somehow part of life anyway, but the finding of the gold when you analyze through... is just life-breathing, and how each discovery seems to have led to an even bigger picture. I now have 7 products up on the web connected with payment processing that are basic, but a start, including Color-by-Numbers where people paint by just following colors. Ruth Collis |
